How To Choose Your DJ Name?
Selecting a DJ name is an important decision that can shape your identity and brand as an artist. Here are some steps to help you choose your alias.
1 – Explore your given name
You might have a really cool name or at least a decent one. I personally have an okay name (“Erick Antoine”) and I decided to stick with it. However, you might be fortunate enough to have a fantastic “real” name.
2 – Try a variation of your name
Keep it personal but make some alterations. Change your last name or first name. Use your middle name and last name instead of your first and last names. This way, you instantly have a sense of “ownership” over the name. It will still be similar to your real name but can be made cooler, more unique, or more memorable.
3 – Utilize your nickname
The hard work has already been done here. Your friends from school have come up with various names for you, and one might have stuck. Of course, if you were given a funny but mean nickname like “spekky twat,” it’s best to avoid using it.
4 – Ensure it’s “radio friendly”
If someone can’t easily write down your name after hearing it in person, over the phone, or on the radio, it might not be ideal. You’ll encounter misspellings or complete misunderstandings when people see it written down and can’t connect it to what they’ve heard.
5 – Verify that your name isn’t already taken
The Chemical Brothers, a DJ/production duo from the UK, were initially named The Dust Brothers. However, when a US band called The Dust Brothers discovered this, legal complications arose, and “The Chemicals” (as they are often called) had to change their name. This could have been avoided if they had done some research beforehand. So, make sure you do your research to ensure your chosen name isn’t already in use.
