How To Get Signed By A Record Label
Securing a record contract necessitates a unique blend of talent, reputation, networking skills, and luck. Essentially, your objective is to capture the attention of the record label with your work. Although there are no definitive rules or magical solutions, common sense plays a significant role.

While you may envision a scenario where a label representative discovers you in a dimly lit room, the most crucial step you can take to increase your chances of getting signed is to actively pursue the deal yourself.

Modern musicians have advantages today due to the abundance of independent labels and the unprecedented and instant accessibility provided by the internet.

Regardless of how well-crafted your music may be, it will not succeed unless you direct it toward the appropriate label. Identify prominent representatives in your genre and search for tracks that complement yours. Are there similarities in terms of sound, BPM, and overall vibe? There’s no point in submitting your progressive masterpiece to a Deep House label or your latest EDM hit to a Techno label.

In the best-case scenario, they will disregard it; in the worst-case scenario, your reputation may be undermined. It may be more challenging to find a suitable label for more unconventional and esoteric material, but the sheer number of labels available compensates for this.

Once you have identified a few potential candidates who might be interested, visit their websites and look for an email address to send your demos (ensure they are of “release quality,” naturally). It is also important to find a specific contact person, and a creative search on Google, LinkedIn, or even Facebook may provide insights into the relevant individuals.

When selecting a label, the temptation is to believe that bigger is always better: the more releases they have, the more established they are. However, it is essential to assess the success of those releases. Look for a label’s previous releases on platforms like Beatport or Traxsource to gauge their average chart positions.

A label with three releases that have reached the Top 10 is preferable to a label with 30 releases that haven’t even made the Top 100. However, the former may hold its artists to higher standards that you will need to meet.

Important note: When submitting your tracks, always include a concise biography (50-100 words are sufficient), and avoid sending links to AIFF or WAV files—anything larger than a 320kbps MP3 will likely be disregarded. Some people prefer SoundCloud links, so it’s a good idea to provide both options. Two or three tracks should be enough for submission.
