Alchemical Disco Interview 2014

Alchemical Disco Interview 2014

Alchemical DiscoWe chatted with Alchemical Disco, who are arguably the hottest duo coming through the ranks. Through the wildly successful cover of Blondie’s “Atomic”, Alchemical Disco have proved their versatility and talent.

1 – Who are you and what do you do?

We are Alchemical Disco (Ayesha Adamo and Lucius von Wahnfried). We came from the future to save dance music.

2 – What do you like about your work?

We like telling a story through our music. We also like when people throw panties at us.

3 – What jobs have you done other than being artists?

Ayesha: I have been a hand model (like in that Seinfeld episode). You have probably seen my hands turn on a washer/dryer, show off diamonds, or tear apart a toaster strudel. I was also in a pop girl band in Asia.

Lucius: I was a poolboy at a New Age commune.

4 – Are the 80s the best decade for music?

Not necessarily, I don’t know if there’s any one best decade, but there are some elements that 80s music had that are missing in today’s music. Like the spirit of the New Romantics, or the kind of style that was born when synthesizers sounded like the future. (In the future, they totally wear shirt-buckles, by the way.)

5 – Name three artists you’d like to be compared to.

Giorgio Moroder, Goldfrapp, and Daft Punk…and of course Blondie, since we did cover “Atomic”.

6 – Are you a big fan of Blondie? Why did you decide to cover “Atomic”?

Ayesha: We’re both big fans of Blondie. I actually think I still have Parallel Lines on both vinyl and 8-track in my storage unit. But we first heard “Atomic” in the movie Trainspotting—Sleeper’s cover of the song. Lucius and I didn’t know each other then, but we both reference back to that film and that song as being something significant. Trainspotting did a lot to bring dance music to the US at the time, and since we were too young to go to clubs back then, the soundtrack was a first look into a different world and a different sound. No matter which version of this song you’re listening to, I think the song itself embodies that same excitement of going out on a night where anything can happen. So, that’s why we chose it.

7 – Do you plan to release a new single this year? When?

Actually we’re going to be putting out a track called “Firebird” within the next month or so. It’s a single, and it’s the most epic thing we’ve done to date. We’re already at work on some new material to follow that as well.

8 – Do you produce songs for other artists?

Lucius: Just remixes so far. But I’d like to work with artists in a variety of different genres.
Ayesha: Definitely. At the moment, Marina and the Diamonds and Iggy Azalea would be top of my list.

9 – Is dance music still underground in USA?

There’s always going to be an underground in dance music. It’s usually where the next big sounds come from, a place where artists can experiment. Dance music is getting bigger in the US, but we think it’s still got plenty of room to grow.

10 – Professionally, what’s your goal as Alchemical Disco?
We have some larger concepts we want to explore in the form of albums and more elaborate live experiences. Singles are great, but it’s hard to take people on a journey in only six and a half minutes. We live large and dream large. That’s what we want to bring to our audience.
