5 Things That Music Therapy Can Help With

Do you ever feel like music can give you superpowers? It turns out, there might be some truth to that. In this article about music therapy, I will explain the physiological responses the body goes through when listening to certain types of music and why it can feel like we have superpowers.

1 – PERFORMANCE

Basically, when we listen to music that resonates with us, the brain produces feel-good chemicals like dopamine. This makes us feel more active and happier, giving us the feeling that we can do more. So in some cases, we actually do more.

2 – STRESS

The right music can help us feel relaxed, and it’s called Music Assisted Relaxation (MAR). It can help lower your breathing rate, heart rate, blood pressure, and cortisol levels. The key to this is the BPM (or beats per minute), and songs with a BPM of 60 are optimal for lowering anxiety.

3 – PRE-NATAL DEVELOPMENT

Studies have shown that music or sounds that were played to babies while they were in-utero seemed to have a calming and soothing effect on them after birth. This can be worth playing Mozart to your unborn baby, right?

4 – PAIN RELIEF

Music can distract us from pain, and certain types of music can regulate your breathing and aid relaxation. When you breathe more regularly at a slower rate, you will withstand pain better.

5 – MEMORY

Music can be helpful for those suffering from degenerative brain conditions. It won’t cure them, but it can help unlock other memories. It can also be used as a memory aid by putting information into a song, just like how many of us can remember a popular jingle.
