“Can I ride a mountain bike on the road?” – A question which is frequently put forth before me. Like any questions asked to me, I thought well before answering this one too. If the question of can you ride a mountain bike on the road? Is a question of possibility, then the answer is a big yes. Yes, you can ride a mountain bike on the road. But moving from the question of possibility to a question of suitability, I find it a little difficult to answer with just a yes or no. My difficulty has to do with the fact that both yes or no would apply but depending only on the reason you want to do so. I will explain it further one by one.
No! You cannot ride a mountain bike on the road
No is the answer you will get if you are into professional road racing. Essentially mountain bikes are very different from the road bikes we are allowed to use on road racing. Mountain bikes are made for mountain roads which have a harsh and bumpy terrain. Mountain bikes provide the mountain racers with a proper grip and give them the complete control over their bike. If you rode a mountain bike on a smooth road and got used to it, it would become harder for you ride a conventional road bike and it, in turn, would make road racing more challenging for you. So if you plan to road race then don’t ride a mountain bike.
Yes! You can ride a mountain bike on the road
If you are determined to become a world-class road, then you can and should ride a mountain bike on the road. As I have mentioned in “No” section. Mountain bikes provide the racers with a proper grip. Since the terrain, on which you need a mountain bike to ride on is usually slippery, the mountain bikes have rolling resistance tires. Practicing with these mountain bikes on the road would enable you to have,

· Improved Stamina
The advantages of riding a mountain bike on the road would come in handy especially when you go on a long road trip with your bike.
To conclude, only you can answer the question of “Can I ride a mountain bike on the road?” Before going for the answer, consider your aims and desires first. If you want to road race, then say not to ride a mountain bike on the road. If you want to become a world class road or want to learn new bike tricks and pedaling techniques, then take your mountain bike out for a road spin.
