How To Choose Your DJ Style?

DEVELOPING A DJ STYLE…

Your DJ style is shaped by the selection of tunes you choose to play and how you mix them. It’s important to adapt your style depending on the club and the expected music genre.

If you became a DJ because you were inspired by another DJ or a specific music genre, you likely have a basic style from the start. However, it’s important not to simply imitate your favorite DJ. Seek inspiration from various DJs, absorb their techniques, and blend them with your own creative ideas. This unique twist will set you apart from other DJs.

Keep in mind that your style may differ between your personal practice sessions and club performances. While you may be passionate about Trance when practicing alone, the club you work at may require you to play commercial dance music. This doesn’t mean you’re confined to being a commercial dance DJ. On the contrary, it means you have versatility and can cater to different audiences. You can showcase your skills with top Trance tracks in large clubs, as well as adapt your set list to suit mainstream crowds with commercial tunes.

The genre of music you play doesn’t dictate how you mix it. By incorporating key changes, tempo variations, shifts in energy, and even genre transitions, you can create a unique style that still resonates with the crowd in front of you.

During live performances, aim to take the audience on an emotional journey. Lead them from moments of cheerfulness and joy to more intense moments where they close their eyes and raise their hands in the air, and then bring them back to cheering and bouncing on the dance floor. Rather than simply choosing tracks that mix well together, strive to create a cohesive musical experience. This approach allows you to demonstrate your creativity, connect with the crowd, and hopefully establish yourself as an exceptional DJ.
