Interview | Questions & Answers With Dhruv Visvanath

Dhruv Visvanath demonstrates he is a complete artist as he reveals his most intimate and deepest feelings with the music he writes. I had the pleasure to interview him and I didn’t hesitate to ask relevant topics you may want to know. We talked about his passion for instruments, his single “Wild”, and the new album ‘The Lost Cause’.

1 — When did you decide to start making music?

I’ve been making music since 2008. It’s been more than 10 years, and I’ve enjoyed every minute!

2 — How many instruments do you play? Which is your favorite?

I play the acoustic guitar primarily but am also proficient on the Piano and the drums, and the bass.

3 — What instrument would you have liked to learn? What prevents you from doing it?

The Violin or the Saxophone. I don’t know what’s stopping me really, I guess I have poor lung capacity, or I already have too many instruments! However, I never say never!

4 — Who are the people that normally listen to your songs?

I perform a lot of my music in India, and whilst my audience is largely Indian, I’ve had listeners from all over the world, from countries like the US, Australia, the UK, Canada, I could keep going on but I’m just happy to have my music hear all over the world! I love hearing stories from people around the world, and I can’t believe the borders I’ve crossed thus far.

5 — I really liked your last clip for your new single ”Wild”. How did you decide the theme of your music videos?

Well, this particular one was thought of carefully by my friend and wonderful director, Tanvi Gandhi. I left the creative process of the video to her knowing that I’d already done my job with the song, I needed a fresh perspective. The idea for the mops living in a thriving city was all hers and I’m glad she built the story of this world around this song.

6 — What were you thinking when writing the lyrics for “Wild”?

I had a photo of my father, my brother and myself walking through a dense forest when I was very little. The blurry image that remains framed on the study table at home reminded me of a past that seemed so innocent and free of responsibility, and I missed that. I kept on thinking of the day my childhood ended, and it worried me. I’m glad that I managed to write a song so close to my heart.

7 — Does that spirit extend through the rest of your album ‘The Lost Cause’?

Absolutely. I wrote most of the music on tour, while I was traveling across India, and each song from the album has a story rooted deeply within my own childhood as well as my adolescence. These songs are really close to my heart and I hope the same comes across to those who listen.

8 — What was the most memorable experience when recording this album?

I recorded this album in my bedroom, and for the most part, it wasn’t soundproofed at all. There are still parts of my final masters that have sounds of dogs barking or ambulances running by on my songs! What an unintended surprise, but I’m glad I left them there.

9 — Are live shows or concerts on your mind at the moment?

At the moment no! This is my vacation time! In India, this time of the year tends to be the offseason, but once the months of July and August arrive, I’m really looking forward to playing my music across the Indian subcontinent!

10 — How do you see yourself in the next 10 years?

Hopefully a lot thinner, and touring the world with my music! I really hope to have my music featured in some amazing movies and I hope to give my family everything they’ll ever need!
