Kelly Padrick
continues to amaze with her music, and now more than ever with her new single “Heavenly Ride”. With an ascending trajectory in the indie scene, her compositions have been featured in important movies and TV shows. Well, I had the chance to interview the NYC-based artist who kindly answered everything we asked her.

1 — Is it true that songwriting was your early childhood hobby?

Yes! I sat at my father’s feet as he listened to country music from the time I was 3 years old and by the time I was 5, I would sit and rhyme words all day long – I’m sure they didn’t make much sense at the time but it’s what made me happy as a child.

2 — How did you learn to sing?

I would sing in the church choir and I took vocal lessons in RI and again once I moved to NYC. I first studied with an opera teacher in RI and then two amazing Jazz vocal coaches in NYC.

3 — Who were your favorite singers or bands growing up?

As a child, definitely Dolly Parton. As I grew older, Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Tyler and Belinda Carlisle were among a few of my favorite singers. And of course, The Beatles.

4 — When and why did you move to New York City?

I first decided to move to NYC after seeing When Harry Met Sally. I fell in love with NY in that film. Also, I had toured New England and so I became familiar with the city and it is close to my family in RI so Manhattan became the most logical choice for me to live.

5 — What challenges have you faced as an indie artist?

Having to prove yourself over and over again. I’ve had a song featured in a movie, on a movie soundtrack, songs on TV and still it’s frustrating when you have to show who you are and what you’ve done as an artist.

6 — Which of your songs are you lyrically most proud of?

“Haze”. I wrote that song during a relationship that caused me a lot of stress, and there’s a line ‘I won’t have time to hate you, I’m busy saving me’. That line, I feel, is how I live my life. I need to take care of myself and not let anything life throws at me get me down.

7 — What message do you hope to transmit through your newest single “Heavenly Ride”?

I don’t write many happy songs, but “Heavenly Ride”, is such a fun, carefree song that I hope it makes someone smile and feel better, especially if they’re having a bad day… I know it makes me smile every time I hear it and I’m proud that it relays a fun, positive message. Life is hard enough – let’s play in the ocean and take a ride. I wish life was that simple.

8 — What was the best part of having your real-life boyfriend in the music video?

Lol. He’s not my boyfriend but an amazing co-star and actor, Dario Barbuto. Maybe my husband will be in my next video, we’ll have to see. ?

9 — Are you planning live shows for the next months?

I hope to play Rockwood Music Hall again and some more outdoor festivals – I need to get my band back together again but I’m looking to do more live shows for sure.

10 — Any advice for other indie artists out there?

Never give up. If it makes you happy, never give up. If it’s your passion, never give up. Keep going and live for yourself.
