MkX is a rising artist with multiple talents. Discover more of his incredible story and his music with this exclusive interview on Electro Wow. Actually, I declare myself a fan of his futuristic themed video clip, “One Sided Love”, which was released not so long ago. It’s definitely a must watch!

1 — How did you become a singer, songwriter, and producer at the same time?

I’ve always had a strong passion for music since before I could walk. I wrote songs since the age of three (of course they weren’t very good back then), but the older I got the more I took music seriously. I started playing guitar when I was 6 which eventually led to doing shows. A few years later my elementary school got Mac computers and I was obsessed with creating and remixing songs in Garageband. When I was 14 I was in a writing session, and the producer I was working with told me that a lot of my ideas were production ideas, not just songwriting ideas. He said I would love music production, and I started learning Logic and Pro Tools when I was 15. It’s my favorite thing in the world, so I just kept creating songs and working on my production skills 24/7 all throughout high school. So it didn’t really happen all at one time but now that I’m 20, all of the things I grew up loving are all coming into play.

2 — What artists influence your music?

Max Martin, Lady GaGa, Cashmere Cat, The Neptunes, Bebe Rexha, Mattman & Robin, Tinashe.

3 — How would you define your music style in one single phrase?

Futuristic pop bangers.

4 — Did you expect a huge success with your debut track “The Look”?

I didn’t know what to expect. I’ve put out music from previous projects in the past, but this was my first release as “MkX”. I had all these songs and this whole vision, I felt like I was living a secret double life. I finally wanted to release one and introduce my artistry to the public. I was super thrilled by the positive response the song got.

5 — In my opinion, your new song “One Sided Love” is filled with great Trap vibes. How did that come about?

I actually wrote the song a couple years ago and kind of moved on from it. It was more of a pop-ballad at that time. About a year and a half ago I experienced another unrequited love, so I naturally gravitated toward the song and decided to completely redo it. My friends at Berklee got me into Trap production. Trap music has a such an energetic quality to it and it definitely has a big influence on my sound. By the beginning of 2018, I completed the final mix of the song.

6 — How’s the reception from your fans so far?

I’m getting a lot of positive response which feels amazing. It’s really cool to see so many people connect with the song. Unrequited love is such a negative thing that a lot of people experience, so I wanted to make this record something that everyone could vibe on together in an uplifting way.

7 — Are the lyrics referring to a specific personal experience?

Unfortunately yes, hahaha. The lyrics are basically my inner monologue from what I was going through. I kept it very detailed to my experience, but also made sure to leave it somewhat broad so anyone can apply it to their own situation.

8 — Can you explain to us the concept of the music video for “One Sided Love”?

I wanted this music video to be less about the song’s lyrics and more of an introduction to who I am as an artist. I wanted it to be very futuristic and cutting edge. That being said, I was very inspired by the super epic pop music videos from the early 2000s. Larger than life, colorful and in your face. All of the concepts in the video are ideas I came up with since I was like 11 years old.

9 — The visual effects look brilliant, what’s your favorite scene?

My favorite scene is probably the video chair. I had two ideas that I turned into one. I wanted to have an electronic chair displaying videos I created, since I love incorporating technology into my artwork. I also wanted to include a metaphor in the video that represented the control my love interest had over me. When you experience unrequited love, that person is all you think about and they pretty much control you. I was basically in the palm of their hands. So I put the two ideas together, and it ended up being my favorite scene in the video. All growing up I was very into film-making and special effects, so I wanted this video to be very VFX heavy.

10 — What are your big plans for the rest of 2018?

I’m getting ready to perform my live-show around, which incorporates technology and visuals I created that go hand in hand with the songs. It’s been a work in progress since the beginning of 2017, so I’m super excited to finally show it to the public.

I’m going to be promoting “One Sided Love” and continuing to release new music. I have a bunch of songs written and recorded, some completely finished and some just demoed out. So I’m going to be working on those for future single releases and eventually an album.
