Steven Jones & Logan Sky are offering up amazing remixes of “Come Back Tonight” across digital platforms. What’s more, they’re releasing a limited edition cassette compilation for ‘RARE Vol. 1,’ featuring 14 unreleased tracks from the last 15 years. Get all the information through this exclusive interview.

1 – What was the vision behind your new remix package for “Come Back Tonight”?

Steven: The vision was of a radical reinvention of what I consider to be the defining song from our album ‘Sacred Figures’. I always felt “Come Back Tonight” had a strong hook that could capture the dancefloor and morph into many different forms. So it’s exciting that this reinvention has happened! It’s always intriguing to hear the fresh vibes brought to our songs by new collaborators.

2 – How did you choose which artists to invite for this new EP?

Steven: This remix project was really the brainchild of Jaime Alguersuari AKA Squire. I collaborated with him in 2023 on a beautiful track called “Burning To Me,” released on his label, Anims. He was interested in releasing remixes of a track from ‘Sacred Figures’ and I suggested “Come Back Tonight.” So Jaime chose the artists he thought could bring something special to the project and he also remixed the track himself. So we have three contrasting versions that make for compelling listening. Music is all about collaboration and this remix EP is a symbol of the amazing connecting power of music.

3 – In what ways do you think each artist reshaped the song?

Steven: Jaime’s mix (Pole Position) stays faithful to the original whilst adding a new propulsion and high-octane sheen. It’s a dynamic balance of retro-New Wave and contemporary club ambience. An absolute anthem!

Alex Medina brings a dubby, moody underground vibe to the track taking it to a darker, more ambiguous place. Atmospheric, nocturnal, smouldering.

Samer Soltan completely transforms the song. Sublime synths and harder edges blend with hypnotic beats and bass. 80’s Bowie beams down to a 21st-century dancefloor.

4 – Tell us about the LOGAN SKY – RARE Vol.1 cassette.

Steven:
Every year our label, Etrangers Musique, produces a limited edition, numbered cassette. These are sent only to VIP Subscribers, our hardcore supporters who want more than just finished releases. They get involved with artwork, choosing colours, and making suggestions about the direction of the label. They are like our friends and we ensure they are included at key stages of our journey and we really appreciate their support!”

Logan: “Previously we’ve had Steven Jones & Logan Sky RARE cassettes. This year it’s my turn to offer 14 unreleased instrumentals!”

5 – Was it a challenge to whittle down your vast back catalog into a cohesive cassette collection, Logan?

Logan: Yes, so much to choose from! I’d amassed so many unreleased instrumentals that my head was starting to explode just from trying to remember them all! Steven Jones is a strong believer in releasing tracks into the world, rather than sitting on them for years (and decades), so this process is partially cleansing and karmic. It took quite a few months to scope out what was available and carefully listen through. The plan was to choose at least 10 unreleased tracks and put them in chronological order. But gradually I shuffled them and also I had to make sure both sides were the same length for the cassette. I’m happy with the final order it feels more like a cohesive album than I ever imagined. Plus the artwork is inspiring and nostalgic, with a stunning orange cassette!”

6 – What can you tell us about the unreleased tracks being compiled for the cassette?

Logan: My approach has generally always been to sit down at the piano and compose chords that fit into a song structure, verse, bridge, and chorus. So about half of the tracks take the listener on a defined drama. There are also some shorter free-form pieces that emote a feeling or a place, like “Feelings Frozen in Time”, “Dream Halo” or “Last Rains”

The oldest track on the cassette “Hochzeit Kommt” from 2006 was written as a theme for my stag holiday in Berlin. It’s a bizarre mixture of Italo Pop, church bells, and brooding Germanic undercurrents!

“Sons of Europa” and “The Morning Frost” sound like they would suit a vocal being added at some point, a tantalizing slice of the future..?

Have You Met Him
7 – Do you have a personal favorite tune from the compilation?

Logan:
The opening track is surprisingly funky! It’s a forgotten gem from 2008 and didn’t have a proper name and was simply labeled “Groove#1.”

I have a recording of a photographer called Marlie saying “Have You Met Him… Logan Sky?” which I thought would be fun to use to introduce a track or album. And this was also an opportunity to also give a name to the track! Listen here:

8 – What unheard elements of your past work do you hope fans appreciate?

Logan:
Unlike Dance music, which can be quite monotonous, these tracks have plenty of drama and evoke many emotions with unexpected turns, highs, and lows. I’ve always been told that my music is quite filmic, in an early 80s way, like John Carpenter. “Last Rains” and “Frozen Mannequins” sound like they’re lifted from the backdrop of a bleak, rainy, dystopian film.

Also, I’m hoping that listeners can start to enjoy some of the instrumental versions, without vocals, for example, “The Distance” really broods, swells, and grinds. It’s quite entrancing.

9 – What other artists inspire you at the moment?

Steven:
I’d have to say Lo Moon, Mansionaire, and also Zola Blood.
Logan: Last year I discovered my new favourite band, Pol from Holland (Pol.fm). They craft their New Wave tracks like a fine wine with great drums, guitar, and vintage synths. They realized that I had toured with Visage so asked me if I’d like to join them on stage, which I did in January this year in Amsterdam. I performed “Malpaso Man” and “Fade to Grey” on synths with them in a packed-out venue… what a great start to the year! Also, the best song of 2024 so far has to go to Georgia for “Too Much Too Little.”

10 — What’s next for Steven Jones & Logan Sky after these releases?

Steven: Being question 10, you’ve reminded us that 2024 marks the tenth anniversary of the release of our first EP ‘Strange Magic’! We’re hoping to mark this milestone with the release of a kind of compilation, gathering our favourite songs with a couple of new tracks. We’re also working on material for a new album scheduled for release in 2025, plus there may be a few surprises along the way too!
