DJ Tips: How To Network The Right Way?

First of all, familiarize yourself with the popular saying, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” This phrase is often mentioned when discussing job hunting. Networking in the club scene can range from casually meeting and introducing yourself to club or bar owners while handing over your demo, to making connections with people who can introduce you to more influential individuals and potentially lead to job opportunities.

Presenting yourself

Your attitude and appearance can make a significant impact in this industry. If you can convince club or bar owners that you would be a valuable addition, whether due to your reliability or your appealing appearance that attracts the public, you’re already ahead of the game. While some music genres may thrive on the aloof and “too cool for you” DJ style, I personally wouldn’t recommend it.

Building friendships

Approaching a club owner directly and asking for work can be a bold move. If they reject you, it may jeopardize your chances of getting a job at that club. However, if you befriend the bar staff and the DJs, they may recommend you for a smaller DJing opportunity, increasing your chances of success.

The way you establish relationships with people depends on your personality. If you believe you can easily strike up a friendship with a DJ at a pub and leverage that friendship to your advantage, go for it. Just be aware that the DJ will likely perceive you as an aspiring DJ from the moment you show interest in their DJ booth. Don’t pretend otherwise, but unless you feel it’s worth pushing, maintain a cool demeanor and avoid aggressively promoting yourself right away.

Getting to know the bar staff, especially senior members, can also be a fruitful path into the club, even as a warm-up DJ. Take your time, become a regular customer, familiarize yourself with the staff and the club, and once you feel comfortable enough, take the opportunity to share your demo and gauge their interest.

Undercover approach

Gaining entry when you’re already inside is relatively easy! Having insider knowledge is a valuable advantage. Working in a bar within the club or pub where you aspire to DJ is an excellent way to subtly sell yourself. You can discreetly showcase your skills, allow people to hear your demo multiple times until they develop a liking for you, and eventually find yourself in the DJ booth. By the time they realize your true intentions, it will be too late—they will already be satisfied with hiring you as their DJ!
