GRLSKOUT has quite an inspiring story she shares with us about how she got into music and what she had to give up. Check out the video below to find out the risk she took to follow her heart & dreams.
Today she also shares with us her new Overjoy remix that she is releasing in May and was kind enough to answer a few questions. Discover more below!
1 – Nice to meet you GRLSKOUT, how are things on your side?
I’m really good thank you! Just been working hard in the studio on new records, projects and originals which I am really excited about.
2 – We’ve learned that you took a pretty big risk to be where you are now, can you tell us a little bit about that?
Yes of course. When I was in high school, I got full scholarships to Acting school but deep down inside I always had a secret dream of doing music. I guess I was a little shy to express that, because the right opportunity was never in front of me, at the time. I ended doing the full year at Vancouver Film School and right before graduating I got an opportunity to join a band and go on tour. The only dilemma was I wouldn’t be able to graduate because I would have to leave for tour. I basically had to give up a twenty-thousand-dollar school that I had only one month left to complete or take a risk for something I’ve always dreamed of. So, like an impulsive 19-year-old, I quit.
3 – Wow that’s crazy!! What did your parents think?
They were very upset with me at the time. I mean, they had every right to be. They were just confused and shocked how I would give something up that I worked so hard for, just like that.
4 – I bet. So how did you get into DJing?
I needed to make money while touring and couldn’t really get a 9-5 job. It was really tough because I needed to do something that was good money, flexible and that I loved. So, I chose DJing.
6 – What a journey! We also see that you are a Producer. Are you self-taught?
I actually am. I personally learn much better at my own pace. I guess some people learn better by taking school which I think is great also.
7 – Do you have any tips for people who would like to learn on their own?
Honestly, just do a lot of tutorials and workshops. There are so many great mentors out there and online Academy’s. I learned mostly by doing Sonic Academy tutorials and watching other video tips from DJs & producers I admire.
8 – Do you spend a lot of time in the studio?
Yes, I do!
9 – What’s your favorite equipment?
My favorite equipment? Hmm… that’s tough. Well, I just got the new Universal Audio Arrow and I love it. I’ll say that’s my favorite for now since it’s my newest addition to my home studio.
10 – Are you planning to release any new music in the future?
I actually am. I’ll be releasing my original stuff this summer and I have an official Overjoy remix coming out on May 9th for their song “Dragonfly”. You should definitely check them out. They are an awesome band.
