Interview | Questions & Answers With nIMO & The Light
nIMO & The Light
is a band lead by Nimo Kally and formed in 2013. Their music is fairly well-known in Israel and also in NYC. Eager to expand this project into new territories, they are promoting their last single “Skin To Skin” all around. Check out this exclusive interview and find out more about it.

1 — Is it true that you came up with the band’s name after reading a sci-fi novel?

I read the novel 10,000 Leagues Under The Sea – by Jules Verne when I was young, and you can say it was somewhat an inspiration, But My stage name was picked a long time after reading it.

2 — How has your creative process evolved over the years?

I moved to New York in 2004 from Tel Aviv (Israel) with my band at the time “Tree of mind”, where I was a composer/producer/bassist. We’ve played in the Triboro area a lot, and released 2 EP’s. In 2012 I started a solo project under my name Nimo Kally. It was the first time I wrote and performed all the songs. I then released the “Espresso River” EP (available on Spotify, iTunes).

In 2013 I formed “nIMO & The Light” a Rock/Pop band.
In 2016 we recorded an acoustic session at City Winery.

In 2017 we recorded a series of lathe cut vinyls under “Leestavall Records”. These are rare recordings where it’s a recorded live session captured straight to vinyl, and every take is different than the other. An experience that belongs to greats as Elvis on “Sun Records” in the 50’s.

After performing extensively around New York and the area, we’ve recorded “Don’t Feed The Pigeons” the band’s first full-length album. “Skin to Skin” is the first single/video off of that album that is scheduled to be released in the fall.

3 — How do you solve disagreements in the band?

I must say we didn’t have many disagreements. For the most part, this band is my project and therefore I make most of the artistic calls.

4 — Were Pink Floyd, Radiohead, David Bowie, and Muse responsible to drew you into music?

I grew up in a very artistic house. My grandfather was a painter and my mom a choir singer. Growing up listening to my mom’s very eclectic collection of artists (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Vivaldi, Bach) inspired me to explore many types of music. I mostly drew inspiration from The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Pixies, Nirvana, Pink Floyd, and Radiohead as a teenager. There was something about Goth/Rock/New Wave that really intrigued me.

5 — How many live shows have you performed up till today?

We’ve performed around 6-10 shows a year, starting in 2013, so around 40-50 shows.

6 — What’s currently on the band’s agenda in terms of concerts?

Following the release of “skin to skin” The band is applying to bunch of festivals and conventions, as well as a mini tour in the Triboro area coming soon. We also looking forward to opening up a bigger act in order to get more exposure.

7 — What do you like the most about your recent video for the single “Skin To Skin”?

What I like the most about it is the gradual development of visuals throughout the song. where it starts black and white in the verses and switches to super colorful visuals in the choruses. The final part is full of visual effects and is climatic in my eyes.

8 — Can you explain to us what is this tune about?

The tune is about the struggles we face in long-term relationships and routines that lead us to forbidden and dangerous situations, in order to get excited. It’s a forbidden love affair between a high social class lady and her bodyguard.

9 — Are “Skin to Skin” lyrics based on fact or fiction?

The lyrics are based on fiction mostly but has some realistic reference.

10 — Is there something else you would like to share with our readers?

I’m really happy with the way the song has been accepted in some outlets, magazines and radio stations. We also have applied to film festivals in the music video category, and hope to get some airplay.
