The Showdown Between Electric & Acoustic Guitars: Which One Should You Choose?

Sometimes, the choice between an acoustic guitar and an electric guitar is simple. This is particularly true if you are interested in a certain genre of music and so, your decision is rather obvious. If not, though, you may be conflicted about which one to select.

Now, before moving on, you should realize that there is no “right” answer here. This is because one type of guitar isn’t better than another. It is more about finding out whether the electric or acoustic version is a better fit for you. So, for this purpose alone, here is what you need to know:

How Much Are You Willing to Spend?

A relatively easy way to narrow down your choice is to determine how much you want to spend on your guitar. More often than not, you will find that electric guitars are more expensive. This isn’t because of the instrument alone. Rather, you need other equipment such as amps and setups. Even here, though, the price gap isn’t too steep. You should be able to get a relatively cheap acoustic guitar for around $200. An electric setup may total around $300 or so.

How Much Effort Do You Want to Make?

Now, you may have heard people say that electric guitars are easier to learn to play. To a certain extent, this is true. This isn’t due to playing style but rather the way the instrument is designed. See, electric guitars have thinner necks and smaller bodies. Therefore, when you are learning to hold and play the guitar, you will have an easier time doing so.

There is also the fact that you can produce sound on an electric guitar more easily. Since the amplifiers and pickups are mostly responsible for sound projection, you won’t have to play the electric version quite as hard.

Is Discomfort Off-putting to You?

Acoustic guitars, on average, tend to have thicker necks and larger bodies. Nevertheless, the most noticeable difference, to players at least, is the strings. Acoustic versions rely on heavy gauge strings which aren’t just trickier to play but are also more painful. So, when you are just getting started, you may not be able to play for very long before the discomfort makes you stop. Not to mention, you may also feel sore for a while afterward.

It should be noted, though, that this pain will eventually go away. Your fingers will toughen up and soon, you will be able to play without stuffing. On the other hand, if you start with an electric guitar, you will not go through this process so your fingers may continue to be sensitive if you decide to switch.

The Best Course of Action

In the end, you can’t really make a decision if you know only half the story. So, why not give both options a try? By doing this, you will be able to avoid limiting your options. It may also provide you with a clearer idea of which instrument is best for you. In fact, you may come to realize that you enjoy playing both and decide to switch as necessary!

The tips here should make it easier for you to answer the one question every novice guitarist asks. Therefore, you can start playing the guitar without any delay.
