Music is the universal language – it cuts across geographical boundaries and brings people together who might not have gathered otherwise.
That said, getting to know a new genre can be challenging. Many people find electronic music and EDM hard to understand at first or feel that they “don’t know how to listen to it” outside of a club setting.
Read on for our top three ways you can have fun with the world of electronic music.
1. Make Your Own
Making your own music has to be one of the simplest pleasures in the world. With electronic music, you don’t necessarily need to know music theory or how to play an instrument in order to make interesting sounds.
It doesn’t matter how skilled or experienced you are – it’s a constant learning process. All you need to get started is some software and a lot of free time. Remember, at this stage, it’s all about fun and exploration – you don’t necessarily need to be thinking about booking shows or mastering an album.
Still, once you get the hang of it, you might end up generating enough music to collect into a playlist to share with your friends! Sending out a playlist is the most personal holiday gift – think of it as the present-day version of the mixtape.

2. Listen to Top DJs
You don’t need to love dancing to enjoy and benefit from electronic music; you can simply turn on the radio or playlist and listen.
Research shows that listening to music is the equivalent of going to the gym for your brain. It can reduce health conditions like anxiety and blood pressure as well as improve your mood, memory, and sleep quality.
If you have friends who are into EDM, ask them for recommendations on their favorite DJs. Ask them to share their top tracks and what they like best about each song. You’ll find electronic music a lot easier to understand if you know what to listen for.
You’re not limited to any space, either; try listening while you’re cooking, or throw on your headphones and head out for a walk. Don’t underestimate the power and flexibility of electronic music – there’s a lot more to discover than just a really great dance beat.
3. Go to Concerts
One of the best aspects of getting into electronic music is that you can share your love with others. You can easily do this by going to concerts – these are a shared experience where you can meet like-minded people.
What’s more, live music has been found to benefit your health, both physically and mentally. For example, live music reduces cortisol levels, which is the hormone that stresses us out.

One of the most special aspects of going to a concert is the fact that we feel more connected to others through this sense of belonging. The EDM scene is famous for prioritizing love, friendship, and community – you’ll see it for yourself when you start attending live shows and festivals.
Thank You for the Music
Music moves us all: it has the power to take us to a whole new space and allows us to immerse ourselves in the listening experience alone or in community with others.
If you haven’t given electronic music a serious chance before, you should take the time to allow it to become a passion. It’s easy to turn the radio on or tune into a playlist; you can even ask your colleagues for recommendations and make it a social point to generate conversation.
Electronic music is everywhere, not just in the club scene – why not get involved?
