This holiday season, Anya Randall Nebel, aka The Anya Audette, brings a new album filled with covers of famous Christmas songs. Ready for an exclusive insight into her creative process?

Dive into the interview below and see how she brings her unique twist to timeless classics!

1 – As someone who loves Christmas music, what is it about the holiday classics that you find so special?

The Christmas songs tell a story of a time when things were simple, but there was a whole world out there which is a mess. It makes me feel safe and happy. While some songs are sad, there is resilience on the other side.

2 – How did you decide which famous Christmas songs to include? Was it all about what fit your style?

I picked my favorites, I made it fit my style and I reinvented which is my narrative for how I have been leading these last few months as I continue to build the brand of theanyaaudette.

3 – I’ve heard you’re combining Dancehall, Dembow, and Jazz. Do you think this project leans towards being experimental too?

Most definitely. Don’t forget to pre-save the album for the upcoming release.

4 – When exactly will you release this new material, and how many tracks does it include in total?

Ten tracks, because I’m crazy! December 13th is the release date. I released one song last week, two more this Friday, and then the full album.

5 – Many people play Christmas music while decorating the tree or preparing dinner. How do you imagine listeners enjoying your new album?

I think they are going to like it. Like the fact that I have many different styles of music on this album just like Burt Bacharach‘s different genres.

6 – What’s the one tune from your ‘Christmas’ album that you’re most proud of covering, and why?

“O Holy Night,” “Rockin Around The Christmas Tree,” and “God Only Knows.” Why? I sang my FACE off on these! I am giving you my classical chops, my Rock chops, and my Pop chops.

I am showing you all things ANYA and I’m so proud of the song selection, and my vocal chops are the best they’ve ever been at 58. Let’s go! I want young kids to feel inspired and tune into something different.

7 – How did collaborating with your husband on “Baby It’s Cold Outside” add a special touch to the album?

We just celebrated our 25th anniversary. “Baby It’s Cold Outside’” is a celebration of our relationship and how we are in real life. A long time ago, we went on a cruise, and we did “I Got You, Babe” when I turned 50. He kept bugging me about doing a duet with me, so I called his bluff and told him to show up at the studio. The rest is history!

8 – Do you and your husband have similar tastes in music and art, or do your creative directions vary?

We have totally different tastes in music, but when it comes to Classic Rock and Disco, we’re on the same page. My music taste is wide and diverse. We have a 22-year-old daughter, so I’ve picked up on some of the things she loves. My husband and I are six years apart—he’s almost 64, and I’m almost 59. Do the math: I lived through the ’80s, and he lived through the ’70s.

He’s Springsteen, and I’m Duran Duran. Get the picture? But I love music, so I’ve educated myself on music history and beyond, making my taste truly eclectic.

9 – With so many famous Christmas songs out there, would you be interested in releasing a second album next year? What would you do differently?

Of course! I can’t wait already into the next Burt Bacharach and the next Christmas album. I will record the Christmas album in July, but the Burt Bacharach album won’t be released until 2026.

I’ve learned a lot this past year, organization is key. Having great producers, vocal coaches, and a clear inspiration for how I want the album to sound is crucial. I will heighten all aspects of the albums.

10 – Finally, what’s the one thing you’d ask Santa for this Christmas?

Honestly, I have had a shit year. My dad had a stroke, and I’m his caregiver. I lost my daughter’s boyfriend’s father and my husband’s best friend this summer. On top of that, the wife of that same best friend is battling breast cancer. I just want happiness and health for all of us left behind.

I want peace, and I want people to be NICE. The man who shall not be named made the world a racist, unkind place to live, but I believe love and music always win! I want Santa to open doors for me to travel and tour with these tunes. I want my own show with a symphony orchestra. Yeah, that’s what I want Santa to bring me.
