Behind The Music: Luchi’s Inspirational Story With “Mountain”

mental health in music industry
With his new single, Mountain, singer-songwriter Luchi stands out as a promoter of mental health in the music industry. While conducting this interview, I found the origin of this song interesting, and how its lyrics can be relatable to many, especially those who suffer from addictions.

1 — “Mountain” has a powerful and emotional message. How did the songwriting process unfold for you, especially writing it at 3 a.m. on your keyboard?

“Mountain” is a special song to me and it is a realisation that you have a battle ahead of you to fight and that you have to have the energy and strength to face it. Writing the song it just came out of me. I was sitting by my keyboard at 3 am as I couldn’t sleep and within 10 minutes it was written. It’s not always the way but when it is, it is magical.

2 — Is there a particular individual or experience that influenced its creation?

It was inspired by a conversation that I had with someone close to me who has addiction issues. I was trying to get them to get help and they just didn’t feel strong enough. It was horrendous to be on the other side watching someone you love in self-destruction. It takes so much strength to pull yourself out of rock bottom and start the healing journey so you have to build up that resilience in yourself to take on the fight. Your demons can be so loud and powerful sometimes, our heads can really be a hard place to live. I have been there before with my own mental health journey so I could relate and also used some of my own experience in the song.

3 — Please tell us more about the instrumentation and production choices that went into creating this anthemic track?

The demo was just me and a piano but I could hear the song being very grand and epic in my head so I sent it to my producer Chris Stagg and he helped me build it into the song you hear now. There was some discussion at the start if it should stay as a piano ballad but I want the listener to come on the journey with me and as the song builds, they feel that in their body too. The racing heart, the anticipation, and like you are going into battle. With the sharp stings and the big booming drums, I think we created a soundscape where the song really takes you on an emotional journey in the music, the lyrics, and the vocals. I also didn’t want to clutter the song with sounds as I wanted to keep it simple but effective.

4 — How do you hope this song will resonate with your fans?

I just hope that it brings comfort to anyone who is struggling and lets them know that they aren’t alone because we suffer alone but heal in the community.

5 — What led you to opt for a lyric video instead of a conventional music video for this song?

To be honest, music videos are long days and expensive to make and I have been doing animated lyric videos for a while now and they resonate well with my audience. Being an independent artist, you have to make creative choices that match your budget, and music videos can eat away at that budget.

6 — You’ve also been involved in songwriting for other artists. What do you enjoy most about contributing your talents to different projects?

I enjoy connecting with other artists and hearing someone singing a song that I wrote is pretty special. There are songs that I write that I just can’t see myself singing but I can hear another artist on and those are the songs that I know are songs to pitch out to other artists.

7 — If someone is keen on engaging your services, what are the key steps they should follow?

Just message me, I’m always up for collaboration with others and just be a decent human, that’s all I ask haha.

8 — Have you explored any opportunities with record labels in the past, and if so, how has that shaped your musical journey?

I have had meetings with labels and also reality singing shows in the past but they all wanted to change my style into their own vision which didn’t match me. I have a very strong vision for my career and I don’t want to chase trends or focus on the fame side of things, for me it’s all about the music so it actually gave me freedom if I want to release an uptempo banger, I can and if I want to release a soft ballad I can, it’s me who gets to decide. Saying that, I’m not closed off to the idea in the future but it would need to be the right team/label who shared my vision.

9 — What’s the game plan for Luchi following the release of “Mountain”?

There is going to be some more music coming out over the next few months which I am excited about and then who knows, well I know but I want it all to be a surprise so stay tuned.

10 — Finally, looking back on your life, do you believe you’ve already tackled significant challenges or reached heights that are akin to climbing a mountain?

Oh, 100%, I’ve been to hell and back a few times and I am still here standing. I always surprise myself when someone says I can’t do something and then I do it. I’m full of resilience and passion but I am trying to enjoy the climb as I am still on the way up.
