Chicago-based artist Cherie Lily is back with a bold new chapter in her musical story: the single and video for “Shade Served.” Serving as both a sonic exorcism and a triumphant statement, the track leans into darker emotional territory than her previous material, yet still lands squarely on the dance floor.
In the press announcement for “Shade Served,” Cherie explains that the song was “inspired by the experience of confronting true injustice.” While her earlier releases already showed her penchant for bold emotions and danceable energy, this one wears raw anger and transformation on its sleeve. “It’s darker than my previous releases,” she says, “because it reflects the depth of those emotions, but it also represents transformation, turning anger and pain into something powerful and creative.”
That push into deeper emotional terrain stands in contrast to her earlier hit “Body,” a collaboration with Vjuan Allure off The Dripping Wet EP and a staple in her Dance-House catalog. “Body” embodied Club Royale energy, a more straightforward House track aiming to move bodies with infectious grooves and vocal hooks. It showcased her facility with groove, sensuality, and the club/party realm she’s long been rooted in.
But “Shade Served” doesn’t abandon that signature Dance DNA; it builds upon it. Cherie infuses the track with a House meets Hip-Hop energy, pairing theatrical, haunting visuals with an intensity that mirrors the emotional stakes of the lyrics.
The track is being positioned as a Halloween-season anthem, a kind of ritualistic purge set to pounding beats. As she notes, Halloween has long been a space for “breaking free, expressing yourself, and embracing creativity,” and she uses that spirit as scaffolding for her own catharsis.
What really sets “Shade Served” apart is Cherie’s full creative control over the music video. Working with limited resources but fierce vision, she handled every aspect—writing, producing, shooting, editing, styling—making the visual companion as personal and uncompromising as the song itself. The video’s dark, theatrical aesthetic complements the track’s energy, turning pain into spectacle and assertion.
Cherie Lily’s journey from Punk-influenced beginnings in New York City (she cut her teeth in bands like Spank and FlüRT) to her House-driven identity is well documented. Over time, she pioneered HOUSEROBICS, a genre blending high-energy electronic dance music with her fitness roots. Her past collaborations (including touring and producing work with Andrew W.K.) and her DIY ethos have long defined her as an artist unafraid to cross boundaries.

With “Shade Served,” she doesn’t just tread new ground; she cultivates it. The track is, as she puts it, more than a song; it’s “a statement of resilience and karmic justice wrapped in an irresistible dancefloor-ready beat.”
The hope is that listeners will feel validated in their anger, then empowered to release it. For those who’ve loved her for the dance energy of “Body” and earlier work, this release promises a bolder, more emotionally expansive side—and one that demands to be felt as much as it’s heard.
