The widespread popularity of lip-syncing is evident through the success of TikTok, and now YouTube’s LipSync challenge allows users to test their skills using Google’s AI technology called Tensorflow.js. By using the device’s camera, LipSync detects facial landmarks and prompts users to sing along to the hit song “Dance Monkey” by Tones and I, assessing their accuracy at the end.
Even if the song is unfamiliar, it can be played repeatedly for practice, and Google assures that all facial data and processing is kept on the user’s device. Once finished, users can download their attempt as a GIF and share their score with others, or challenge friends and family. While currently limited to one song, users can donate to ALS research for more AI-powered challenges in the future.
