This Forgotten Retro Synthpop Hit Appears In New Trump Movie

Published

on

The forgotten retro Synthpop hit “Fantasy Boy” by the Spanish duo Baccara has been rediscovered in the new Trump movie, The Apprentice. Additionally, the Oscars recognized this docudrama with two acting nominations.

No doubt, it’s a film with great performances. It highlights Trump’s complicated relationships, especially with his family, and shows how he became the malignant narcissist he is today.

What Happened to Baccara?

Baccara, known for their distinctive white and black stage outfits and harmonized vocals, enjoyed significant popularity in Europe during the late 70s and the 80s. The group, comprised of María Mendiola and Marisa Pérez, was particularly successful in countries like Germany and France.

Sadly, Mendiola, the singer of “Yes Sir, I Can Boogie,” passed away in Madrid at 69 in 2021. Meanwhile, Pérez retired from music in 2008. Currently, Baccara is represented by two completely different singers from the originals: Cristina Sevilla and Helen de Quiroga.

Their latest single, “The Power of Love,” was dropped on February 14th, 2025, via Team 33 Music.

The Apprentice “Fantasy Boy” Scene

The inclusion of this forgotten retro Synthpop hit brings a unique soundtrack to the story of Donald Trump’s early business days and cheating scandals while married to Ivana. “Fantasy Boy” originally released by Baccara in 1988, talks about love, desire, and the allure of an unattainable figure.

The docudrama’s musical selection highlights how retro sounds can provide unexpected context and emotional resonance when examining historical narratives. Not to mention, fans of vintage synths might find this unexpected musical connection particularly fascinating, as it adds a layer of nostalgia that enhances the storytelling.
