Heather Christie
Heather Christie is a true champion for moms in the music industry. In this interesting interview, she talks about her groundbreaking label Möonbabe Records, the concept of motherhood, her first collaborative compilation, ‘SPRING, and her exciting plans for the future.

1 – What do you think will be Möonbabe Records’ biggest contribution to the music industry?

We are one of the first to truly create a space dedicated to the artistry of mothers. I have not seen anything else like this in the music industry, and in my opinion and that of so many other female artists I know, it is SO needed.

2 – When it comes to moms who want to be part of this record label, what artistic qualities are you looking for?

We have defined our genre sense as a crossroads of ‘feminine Electronic, Indie Pop, devotional, world, and medicine music’ – or any creative combination of the above. We value songs that can be danced to, felt to, driven to, and have a depthful message of empowerment leading them.

3 – Do you think motherhood can be a roadblock for women to pursue their dreams of having a music career, or is it actually the opposite?

Well, the concept of mothers and professional artists is not something you see in the mid-range successful artist model. I mean, there’s Beyonce and Alicia Keys, who can tour with entourages of nannies for their children, but for a musician who’s looking at more small-scale success models, you don’t have a lot of examples in the world. So the mindset around ‘how can I possibly do both?’ can be disempowering to a mom or woman who wants to become a mother and still be fully dedicated to her music.

HOWEVER, what I’ve found is that I have had more success than ever since becoming a mom, and I think it’s because I take myself and my time commitments seriously, I focus when I have the time to, and I have that much more capacity to give to my music. In other words, I’ve stepped into a ‘pro’ level as a human being since becoming a mother, which filters into my musicianship. I can enter conversations about negotiation, self-representation, and style better than I ever could before. I am deeply committed to my goal of being both an awesome musician and mother, which is going to look unique to me and my path, as it will for everyone else’s.

4 – Why did you choose to release your first compilation, ‘SPRING,’ during this time of year instead of summer, autumn, or winter? Is there a special reason behind it?

I feel like the Spring Equinox is the first point of the year after the New Year that we are really coming awake, and in that sense, it starts the year as the ‘first’ Equinox.

5 – Was it easy or difficult to gather a group of talented women for this musical project? How did you convince them to join?

It was surprisingly, overwhelmingly not difficult to find a lot of talent! I mean I thought it was a cool idea to do compilations, but I had no idea how many women would be so gung ho about the idea! We have received many more submissions, and are excited to incorporate them into our next seasonal compilations!!

6 – What style of music does this compilation encompass?

As I said before, there is a clear rootedness in a ‘deep, empowering message given by a feminine voice’ – whether that voice be literally sung or voiced through production style. This compilation spans several different languages and genres because the metaphysical voice of the feminine is spoken through multiplicity.

There is Brazilian, Swedish traditional, Indie Space Pop, Lo-fi RnB, and a lot of what I call ‘femmetronic’, or Electronic with a softer edge; perhaps Downtempo or Organic House would also be good descriptors. I think it’s the vibe that ties them all together, and I’ll let the listener decide how exactly to put their finger on what that is.

7 – Lyrically speaking, do you think there’s an overall theme going on?

Empowerment, nature, and love themes weave through each of the songs in their own unique ways.

8 – What new or different things can we expect in your next compilation?

The SUMMER compilation is going to be more dance-party-ready and late-afternoon hazy, and the AUTUMN will be more contemplative and turning inward; then the WINTER will be much more meditative and grounding. We try to match each season up with the energy and vibe we feel is collectively being called into focus during that season.

9 – Have you ever thought about the possibility of putting on a live show for this compilation?

That’s a great idea! I haven’t, but secretly one of my favorite things to do is put on special events. So maybe at the end of this year of releasing this compilation series, we’ll have a big show to celebrate. Thanks for that seed!

10 – In three words, how would you define Heather Christie as both a mother and an artist?

Hmm. Trailblazer, attuned, and dynamic. Thank you!
