Interview | Questions & Answers With Jaja Bu
In this exclusive interview, Jaja Bu opens up about his debut song “Sweetness”. I recently shared on this blog my review about this brilliant Electronica track. Finally, I got the chance to find out more about it with its mastermind. Apart from this, he also clarifies his role as an artist and gave his opinion on other music subjects. Read his answers below!

1 – When did you develop your musical talent?

I started playing drums when I was really young, age 7. I still play but that evolved more into other instruments and producing etc.

2 – How long have you been producing music and DJing?

I started really diving into production in 2013. I’m not really a DJ, or have much DJ experience but is something I’d like to get into at some point. My artist project is more from a band/production background, with a lot of live instruments blending with electronics.

3 – What does your artistic name mean?

Jaja Bu is a name my dad called me when I was really young, was embarrassed about it then, LOVE it now ha ha ha.

4 – What makes you decide to release “Sweetness” as your debut single?

I feel like “Sweetness” was a song that I just had to release for myself and to get this project off the ground. It felt like the perfect blend sonically to portray the music I’m making. Some of the other songs are more groove-based, and some are really dark, this felt like a nice intro to that.

5 – What is the catchiest part of “Sweetness”?

For me, I love that percussion break after each chorus. I still make the groove/stank face every time I listen or play it.

6 – Who was the singer who provided the vocals? Are you planning future collaborations with different vocalists?

That’s me. I’ll be singing on all of the songs, but definitely open to having some other voices on tracks for sure.

7 – Was there any special event in your life that inspired you to write its deep lyrics?

Yeah I mean, this was a weird time for me when I started writing this. It’s mostly about intimate relationships that enter your life, and being content and happy that they happened- trying not to stress about if it’s a short wave or a forever type thing you know?

8 – What’s your perspective on the trend of producing hybrid electronic music?

Ahh I mean, to be honest, I don’t really think about where the music will live or what genre it is. I’ve been influenced and inspired by so many artists in my life that it’s easier and more inspiring for me to just make what I personally love, and lyrically just tell my best story or experience you know? I grew up on Manson and Smashing Pumpkins, and now I’m listening to a lot of Frank Ocean and Hall and Oates, and Sade so it’s hard to draw a line for me

9 – What is your favorite dance track of all time? Why?

Of all time hmmm that’s tough, I will say right now currently my favorite is Kaytranada’s “Lite Spots” that song just grooves so hard, and drops at such a dope moment. Of all time though I’d have to dig, I love all of the older Janet jams.
