Kim Petras‘ new music video for “Need For Speed” is one of her most creative visuals yet. There’s a lot of action and eye-catching scenes that will keep your eyes glued to the screen, and the ending is genuinely shocking!
Under Ashley Hood’s direction, the clip below takes a bold swing at what it means to be a manufactured star in today’s industry. The trans artist commits to it fully, including a scene where she literally bets her Grammy away.
Hit play and see it for yourself.
What’s the Song Actually About?
“Need For Speed” might make you think about racing, but the meaning goes much deeper than that. Kim has opened up about this single being inspired by the relentless pressure to keep delivering hits. She talks about how that cycle can strip away your true self over time.
Coming from a trans woman who has fought to carve her own path in the music world, I think that’s a pretty powerful thing to say through an infectious Electro-Pop track.
As a matter of fact, Frost Children, Margo XS, and nightfeelings co-produced this one, and that trio clearly knew what they were doing because it delivers!
Definitely, it’s the kind of tune that gets stuck in your head after the first listen. You won’t even be mad about it.

Part of Something Bigger
In case you didn’t know, “Need For Speed” is actually the fourth cut from Kim’s upcoming third album, ‘Detour.’
After a very public falling out with Republic Records, Kim took matters into her own hands. She even called out the label on social media earlier this year, demanding to walk away from her contract before deciding to go fully solo.
The album had been ready for six months while the label stalled on a release date and left her collaborators unpaid. She even dipped into her own pocket to fund the music video herself.
That’s where BunHead Records comes in. She founded the creative house back in 2016, and by reviving her own imprint, she’s now able to bypass the corporate red tape and finally release ‘Detour’ on her own terms.
And if this gem is any indication of what’s coming, the album is going to be something special.
Without further ado, keep an eye on Kim Petras’ new music because ‘Detour’ might be her most personal project yet!
