New Music From Detroit

Bringing fresh new music from Detroit, Damon Fletcher blends high-energy dance beats with uplifting messages. In this interview, he talks about one of his coolest tracks, “Welcome,” his influences, and what makes The Motor City’s music scene so special.

1. For readers who are just discovering you, give us the unofficial intro: Who is Damon Fletcher when he’s not creating music?

I am Damon Fletcher, and when I am not creating music, I am a guy who thrives on energy, connection, and spreading positivity. Given my love for performing and making people feel good through my music, I  carry that same uplifting spirit into my daily life.

2. The Detroit music scene has given us legends from Motown to Techno to Hip-Hop. Where do you see your sound fitting into that rich musical legacy?

Detroit’s music legacy is incredible- Motown shaped Soul and RnB, Techno revolutionized electronic music, and Hip-Hop has produced some of the greatest lyricists. I see my sound carrying that legacy forward by blending high-energy dance vibes with feel-good, uplifting messages.

My music is about joy, movement, and escape, much like how Motown gave people Soul, Techno gave them rhythm, and Hip-Hop gave them stories. I want to be part of the next wave of Detroit artists who bring people together through music that makes them feel alive.

3. What’s the story behind your new track, “Welcome” and what were you hoping fans would feel when they pressed play?

“Welcome” is all about creating an atmosphere where everyone feels included, celebrated, and free to just be themselves. I wanted it to feel like an open invitation, whether you’re stepping into a party, a new chapter in life, or just a moment to let loose and enjoy the music.

4. If “Welcome” was the soundtrack to a specific moment in your life, what moment would that be?

“Welcome” would be the soundtrack to that moment when you walk into a party, a club, or even a new chapter of your life, and you can feel the energy shift in your favor. It’s that feeling of stepping into a room where people are excited to see you, where the vibe is electric, and where you know you’re about to have an unforgettable night.

Maybe it’s the first time you hit the dance floor after a tough week, letting go of stress and just feeling the music take over. Or it could be that moment when you finally decide to chase your dreams, stepping into the unknown with confidence, knowing that the world is ready to welcome you.

Whatever it is, “Welcome” is about embracing the moment, feeling good, and knowing you belong.

5. What’s one thing about making music in Detroit that outsiders might not understand or appreciate?

One thing outsiders might not fully appreciate about making music in Detroit is the city’s deep-rooted musical legacy and the pressure that comes with it. Detroit isn’t just Motown’s Techno, Hip-Hop, Rock, and Soul all mixed together, and artists here grow up with a standard of excellence.

There’s a raw, unfiltered energy in the scene because people hustle hard to stand out. The city’s blue-collar work ethic translates into the music, where authenticity matters more than industry trends. If you’re from Detroit, people expect you to bring something real, something with soul, and that’s a weight and a privilege at the same time.

6. What’s your creative process like? Are you a middle-of-the-night inspiration guy or more of a structured studio session type?

My process is a mix of both! I definitely get those middle-of-the-night bursts of inspiration. Sometimes, a melody or lyric just hits me, and I have to record it right away. But I also believe in structured studio time to refine everything and bring the vision to life.

It’s all about capturing the raw energy first, then shaping it into something polished that still has that magic.

7. Usher’s clearly an influence on your style. What is it about his artistry that resonates with you?

Usher’s artistry resonates with me because he’s the full package; his vocal ability, stage presence, and storytelling through music are all top-tier. He doesn’t just sing; he performs in a way that makes you feel every word.

His ability to fuse RnB with Pop and Dance elements while keeping it authentic is something I admire. Also, his dedication to his craft is next-level.

Watching his MasterClass on performing was a game-changer for me. It really broke down what it takes to command a stage and connect with an audience. That kind of passion and work ethic is something I strive for in my own career.

8. What did you take away from collaborating with legends like Zaytoven?

Collaborating with legends like Zaytoven was an incredible experience. It reinforced the importance of authenticity and staying true to my sound while learning from someone who has shaped the industry.

Zaytoven’s mastery of melody and production taught me a lot about crafting music that resonates emotionally and gets people moving. His work ethic and attention to detail also inspired me to push my creativity further.

Overall, it was a reminder that working with greats isn’t just about making music; it’s about absorbing their wisdom and energy to elevate my artistry.

9. Do you think a great song comes more from technique or raw emotion?

A great song is usually a balance of both, but if I had to pick one, raw emotion tends to have the bigger impact. People connect with music because of how it makes them feel, and emotion is what drives that connection.

A technically perfect song can be impressive, but if it lacks heart, it won’t stick with people.

That being said, technique enhances emotion. If an artist knows how to shape melodies, write lyrics effectively, and deliver a performance with the right phrasing and dynamics, it amplifies the emotion rather than replacing it.

The best songs, whether they’re stripped-down ballads or high-energy bangers, hit because they feel real while also being well-crafted.

10. Music from Detroit has always been ahead of its time. Do you feel pressure to innovate, or do you focus more on honoring traditions?

That’s a great question. Detroit has such a rich musical legacy, from Motown to Techno to Hip-Hop, and it has always been a city that pushes boundaries. I definitely feel inspired by that history, but I don’t see it as pressure.

For me, it’s about blending innovation with tradition. I want to honor the greats who came before me while also bringing something fresh to the table. My goal is to create music that makes people feel good, gets them moving, and spreads joy, just like the legends of Detroit have done.
