At a pool in the Hollywood hills, Luxxury filmed their brand new video for the Disco single “What Do Ya Really Want.” Truly daytime Disco, just in time for summer.
You can watch it below. There are still reasons to be cheerful elsewhere! I’m loving the vintage aesthetics. This is one of the best videos of 2016. Directed by Jim Harmon.
The Man Behind the Music
Luxxury is the project of LA-based producer Blake Robin, who also goes by the alias Baron von Luxxury. He first started making waves in 2014 with his celebrated series of slow Disco remixes that drew on the original multi-tracks of classic songs.
His vocoderized take on “Hotel California” earned attention from both the disco underground and the Wall Street Journal alike, setting the stage for a prolific run of original releases on labels including Kitsuné, Future Disco, Eskimo, etc.
A Sound Rooted in Vintage Sunshine
Robin’s Disco-centric sound is rooted in classic West Coast sunshine and vintage vibes, think LCD Soundsystem meeting the Bee Gees, as remixed by Todd Terje.
Raw, funky bass lines, a mastery of space Disco, and astral effects that feel beamed in from a more cybernetic Los Angeles all define the Luxxury aesthetic.
Disco Is Far From Dead
The track paints a vivid picture of the 1970s through slow funk grooves filled with psychedelic electronic guitar and synth, making a strong case that Disco is far from dead.
Beyond his studio work, Blake Robin has taken the Luxxury sound on the road extensively across the US, Mexico, Europe, and India, both as a DJ and fronting his full live band, who have performed on NBC’s Last Call with Carson Daly and opened for acts such as Escort, The Juan Maclean, and Giorgio Moroder.
