If mourning doves could write albums, this is probably what they’d sound like: cinematic, tender, a little mystical, and unapologetically perched somewhere between heartbreak and healing. But lucky for us mere mortals, it’s Tara Beier—Canada’s Indie-Folk enchantress turned California desert oracle—who’s gifted us ‘Mourning Doves of Joshua Tree,’ out now via Manimal Records.
Let’s set the scene. Joshua Tree: part rock, part cactus, part spiritual Wi-Fi signal. And into this cosmic dust storm walks Beier, grieving the loss of her grandmother, juggling twin toddlers, and somehow still smelling like her own line of all-natural lavender mist. (Yes, she’s that kind of woman.) What follows is an album full of desert dreams and feathered metaphors—because apparently in Beier’s world, doves are not just birds but celestial grief counselors with wings.
Musically, Beier blends alt-folk and Americana with a cinematic sweep, clearly borrowing a few tricks from her filmmaking past. “Rainbow” hits you with nostalgic indie-rock fuzz like the soundtrack to a vintage home video you didn’t know you missed. “Desert Soul” slinks through the sand with a ghostly groove, conjuring tumbleweeds and tears in equal measure. It’s no surprise Paste Magazine called it “an intimate study of loss and transformation.” We’d call it “Fleetwood Mac meets a Joshua Tree ayahuasca ceremony.”
Her lyrics don’t just sit prettily on the page either. They do things—like remind you to call your grandmother, cry in the car, or consider a spiritual awakening via pigeon-adjacent spirit guides. It’s all very emotional, but also oddly refreshing—like finding a cold-pressed juice bar in the middle of the Mojave.
