7 Must-Have Wardrobe Essentials For The Winter Months

winter months
First things first, you don’t have to sacrifice fashion for warmth. Yes, you need to be equipped to face the elements. But this does not come at the price of style. In fact, we believe that some of the most stylish pieces are accessories that you can only wear in the colder months. Think lush, knit scarves that give that distinctively relaxed, cozy look. Or tall, thick socks that hit fashion-forward spots like none other. Here are my favorite wardrobe essentials for the winter months that you won’t want to miss.

Skinny Jeans

Fit and material are the two game changers when you’re looking to stay warm. While light materials like linen will serve you best in the summer, wool and cashmere are sure to keep you toasty in the winter. Add to these naturally-insulating fits and you get winter perfection. Wide-legged pants like culottes made a real splash this year, but get ready for the skinny jean’s comeback as it gets colder. The fact is, wide pants cannot trap heat. You’re left with a draft running up your legs. To stay warm, you need to protect your skin from the cold by providing a barrier, whether this means oil for your hair or clothes on your back. Short coats are in, too, so most of us will only have our pants to break the cold wind. Skinny jeans are ideal, both functionally and stylistically. They’ll add definition to your figure and allow you to play with a looser top.

Slouchy Sweaters

Speaking of tops, big sweaters are all the rage this winter season. Get cozy with cashmere, the most dreamy, soft material on the market. Unlike pants, the lose fit works with sweaters because you don’t have to worry about insulation—you can always throw on a coat for warmth before leaving the house. You’re covered from head to toe. Another tip is zipping up one of those slim puffer vests under your sweater. You’ll turn heads in the street with your sweater and stay as warm as if you were wearing a coat.

Leather Jackets

As we mentioned above, short coats are in. Leather jackets are the best iteration of the style, so don’t hesitate to get in touch with your inner awesomeness. There’s a leather for everyone, so don’t worry if vegan fashion is your thing. Faux leather—and fur—is becoming something of a staple. From Natalie Portman to Stella McCartney, eco-conscious celebrities are leading the charge with cruelty-free, sustainable fashion. Alternative materials are changing the fabric of the fashion industry. See what we did there? Pun. Intended.

Big Bags

Vegan leather bags are also available for animal lovers. Go big or go home, with large stuff-it-all-in purses that even Mary Poppins couldn’t fill to the brim. Hobo or tote styles are essentials, especially when you have all your accessories to stash the minute you enter a building with heat blasting. You don’t want to lose your fancy new gloves and soft scarf. We’ve all been there; stow them away safely in your bag and never live through the horror of losing them again.

Sneakers are the most underestimated wardrobe essential for winter. They provide great grip and versatility. Additionally, they are easy to put on and off, especially women’s slip-on sneakers. When you’re bundled up to the chin, bumbling around like the Michelin Man, the last thing you want to do is bend over to untie shoelaces. You’re overheated, and my goodness are you deserving of a cup of piping hot chocolate. This is the time to hibernate, eat well, and rest. You deserve it! Walking in the cold is a workout in itself. Slip-off your slip-ons as soon as you walk through the door. Sink your toes into a fluffy carpet. Aaaah. Much better.

The ultimate marriage of comfort and utility, turtlenecks will never go out of style. This year is no exception. Again, choose cashmere and a tight fit and you’ll be warmer than you’ve ever been. Get creative with a long, turtleneck dress or a shorter mini style. You can’t go wrong with the cut. It’s iconic, especially in black. I mean, who doesn’t want to look like Audrey Hepburn for a season? Seriously. Find a single person who doesn’t want to copy her silhouette.

Tech-friendly Gloves

Just because it’s literally freezing outside doesn’t mean you can’t text your friends back. Enter the best thing since sliced bread: tech-savvy gloves, responsive to touchscreens on phones and tablets. Make sure you get the kind that are actually warm, as some aren’t thermally-lined. The most sophisticated ones on the market are also hand-washable. The only problem is they’re so comfortable you won’t want to take them off. Ever.

Whoever said Fall was the most fashionable season of the year is missing out. By combining comfort with style, winter offers the greatest combination of all. The more layers, the better. That means more fabrics, more fashion, and in a word, more fabulousness.
