Brazilian artist Hoochie Coochie Papa is in love with analogic synths and the whole 80’s vibe. If you’re also on the same track, then you should hear his first Cosmic Disco/Synthwave EP, ‘AE86.’ Learn more details about him and his music in this exclusive interview.
1 – When and how did you start off making music?
I’ve always been passionate about electronic music! So from 2014, I started to produce my songs in an old Techno project. But I’ve always been passionate about Disco and I surrendered to that style… I started to build and incorporate some analog synthesizers in my productions and create my cosmic identity.
2 – Which style of Disco do you prefer to work with?
I use to produce tracks of different Disco styles. And I always try to mix them up. But currently, I’ve preferred to make tracks more related to Italo/Dark Disco and Synthwave.
3 – How would you describe the market for the music you produce?
Currently, songs of this style are not usually played in mainstream media and parties. But I feel that it is increasingly gaining acceptance from a larger and younger audience in the electronic scene.
4 – As an artist, what are you most proud of?
My greatest pride is knowing that my music has been played and danced in different corners of the world. What comes after that is just a bonus
5 – Did it take so long to produce your newest EP ‘AE86’?
I think it took me about two weeks to produce everything. That’s what it usually takes to produce a two-song EP.
6 – Is this EP improvised or was it planned?
It was improvised. Result of some games I was doing with my Korg Poly 800. Composing some arpeggios and lines and suddenly the two tracks appeared
7 – What’s the inspiration behind this project?
Composing the two songs I was thinking about the magic that 80s culture brought to us. The synths, cars, movies, games… And then these two tracks came out in which I tried to put a lot of what that magic brings me.
8 – How many synths did you need for this material?
Most of the music tracks were recorded separately on the Korg Poly 800. Also used some timbres on Minilogue. But I used some VST’s to build some additional timbres and also the drums.
9 – Are you open to collaborations or do you prefer to work all alone?
Totally! I usually do my tracks alone but sometimes I do some collaborative projects. It’s always good to learn and exchange experiences.
10 – Finally, what does Hoochie Coochie Papa actually mean?
Hoochie Coochie Papa was taken from a Blues song that I’m passionate about and that is very famous: Hoochie Coochie Man. But in essence Hoochie Coochie Papa is music, it’s dance, it’s magic, it’s putting everything well on the dance floor.
