Global eclectic Pop artist Jose Conde has unveiled a fresh album titled ‘Souls Alive In The 305.’ His imagination has no limits as there’s a touch of Latin-influenced sounds fusing with other styles. This interview is a must-read!

1 — Why the album is called ‘Souls Alive In The 305’?

Like the title track, I felt this collection of songs kept a thread of hopeful celebration beyond the artifice and problems created by people in life, ideas, and places like my hometown, Miami, aka the 305. Beyond the BS, SOULS (is, are) alive… Oh and yeah, FYI the apostrophe is not omitted or forgotten, it is invisible but very present. 🙂

2 — How many collaborators were part of this project?

I produced and wrote the album and played many of the instruments but I had some amazing help from co-producer Andrew Yeomanson aka DJ SPAM. Also, some great musicians made their mark on the album including singer Geminelle Rollins, Electric Kiff drummer Armando Lopez, Afro Beta singer Cuci Amador, Cuban flutist Magela Herrera, drummer Gintas Janusonis, trumpet player Steve Gluzband, Spam Allstars percussionist Tomas Diaz, etc.

3 — In your opinion, which is the funkiest track?

Well, that depends on what mood of funk you are up for cause funk is at the core of the album in various guises. “Dale Pa Ya” is electric funk. “Poetry In Motion” is Neo Soul-Funk, “Souls Alive In The 305” is Disco, Rap, and Funky, and “Grito Ambiental” has a Worldbeat Brazilian Funk vibe…

4 — Do the varying styles on your album reflect your current listening?

Music is a way to travel the world instantly without having to renew your passport or physically go anywhere. I like to travel far and wide. So yeah my listening is always very far and wide!

5 — Have you ever made any records that you really don’t like?

Every album and record is an experiment. Some turn out better than others. That said if I really do not like a recording or song I’ve made it does not get recorded. I am very proud of my work and I feel happy and blessed that it is all being listened to all over the planet.

6 — It is well known that from past albums Latin music has been an integral part of your style. What is the story behind the change?

People insist on keeping me in the Latin music box! ‘Souls Alive In The 305’ is an eclectic album informed by various styles, including Latin music! Maybe I should make a Megadeth tribute album using only Moog synthesizers and distorted vocals. I wonder if they will call that Latin music?

7 — Fact: Latin music is currently the most streamed in the world. In your opinion, why is that?

Rhythm and spice, it can be sexy, rustic, sophisticated, or simple. The melange of rhythms is life and an amazing pool to bathe in when not cheesy!

8 — We are excited to see your shows, Are you planning more concerts or live shows anytime soon?

Thanks. I’m in Costa Rica making video clips and working on a film project. I am looking to play extensively beginning this winter and hopefully tour next year.

9 — What does the future hold for Jose Conde?

I am getting deep into film production and I’ll announce here that I am working on a documentary that might be a docudrama. I am tentatively calling it “El Loco From New York.” It is a film about how different people approach preservation of the Earth, community, and survival in Costa Rica, and it has a fun twist. I am filming and editing the film myself and will have a soundtrack for it of my music and also write the score. It is coming along very nicely.
