Exclusive Interview: Kory Burns Discusses New Single “Radio” And More

Kory Burns was mentored by the late singer-songwriter Betty Wright. Betty wrote songs for Beyonce, Mary J, Jay Z, Gloria Estefan, Lil Wayne, Jennifer Lopez, and Snoop Dog and won a Grammy in 1976 for her song, “Where is the Love.” On the other hand, his vocals have been compared to the one and only Eldra Patrick aka El DeBarge. 1 — How did you discover that singing was the thing for you?

When I was 3 years old I heard the song “Dreamlover” by Mariah Carey and from that moment there was no looking back.

2 — Are you vocally trained or is it all-natural talent?

I believe my voice is a gift from God so I’ll go with mostly natural talent (haha) In all seriousness when I was 14 I started vocal lessons and then at 18 got introduced to R&B icon Betty Wright and she trained my vocals for the past 11 years until she passed on Mother’s Day.

3 — If you could sing one song for the rest of your life, what song would you sing and why?

This is such a hard question! There are so many good ones but I’d have to say my new single “Radio” which is available October 16th on all music platforms (haha) but that’s not acceptable, so I’d have to say “I Swear” by All 4 One. It’s such a good vocal moment and I get to show off a little bit with my singing and that song brings everyone back to a nostalgic time and I am all for some good nostalgia.

4 — What inspired you to write your new single “Radio”?

I was sitting in the studio with Sean McMillion & Carlos Battey (Producers & Writers) and one of my best friends was with me, we were bouncing ideas back and forth. I wanted something very sexy / Pop / R&B and a little more mature and I think we created that. The song really came to us and we sat in the studio from 10 pm – 9 am. Time flies though when you’re making hits.

5 — How would you compare it to your previous singles?

This song is way more mature. I always want all my music to be universal and I definitely kept that aspect in this song however, I had more fun and gave myself more freedom. The vibe is different as well as my style of singing.

6 — Were there a lot of changes?

There could be 100 changes but I have a way of being able to pull it off and make it work. I think we did that with this song.

7 — Do you think music is helping people to deal with pandemic stress?

My music might not specifically help people with the pandemic but if I’m able to have somebody forget about their reality for 3 minutes from my music I’m here for it. If anything it might get people in the mood and that’s a stress reliever so… (haha)

8 — How do you feel about working with the platinum-selling producer Sean McMillion?

It’s so funny to hear those words. I have been working with Sean on all of my projects starting with my very first song “Count The Ways”. We met at Betty’s House when she was auditioning me to be apart of her music school. He’s seen me grow and mature into the young man I am now and I think that’s so dope. He is a brother I never wanted and I couldn’t be greater full. I don’t look at him any different as I did before and whenever we get to work together it just feels right. He’s my brother.

9 — Are you planning to release music videos anytime soon?

Yes! Doing a music video is one of my favorite things to do! I get to be very creative and I’m very hands-on. I have a great concept for the “Radio” video and I can’t wait for you all to see it!

10 — What do you miss most about performing live?

The energy, the having to win over a crowd because they have no idea who the hell you or where the hell you came from (haha) I just miss the interaction. I love going off stage and walking around the audience and dancing and singing with and to them. It’s amazing. I have the WORST stage fright but once I’m on, IM ON.
