Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to a very special interview today! The brilliant singer-songwriter, Malek Hanna, delves into the creation and inspiration behind his fresh single, “We Can’t Stop, and much more. This empowering anthem emerged as a beacon of light, hope, and unity.

1 — Can you tell us more about how you started as a singer-songwriter?

I always felt drawn to music at an early age. However, I started to actually explore my voice and sing in front of others at about 13 years old, during my freshman year while attending Xavier High School in NYC. I sang in the choir and was encouraged to solo at the church shortly thereafter. I then auditioned for the school musical and was cast as a lead in several productions. As for songwriting, I frequently used to journal and write poetry as a teen, but never really focused on or considered myself a songwriter until later in life.

2 — What inspired the creation of your new single “We Can’t Stop”?

“We Can’t Stop” was created from the need to bring joy, inspiration, and hope during a time of despair and crisis. The rise of COVID was in every headline and fear was amidst our nation. “We Can’t Stop” was meant to encourage solidarity and union during a very divisive time. As the lyrics proclaim… “Have you ever given up, when the road ahead gets tough when you think you’re all alone and the ones you love are gone… go on, pick yourself up, dust off and never stop, listen to the voice within…” My co-writer, Raed Saade, and I wanted to not only inspire people but remind them that we are alive and that things will be okay if we stick together.

3 — You collaborated with former The Voice contestant Raed Saade on this single. How did that partnership come about?

It was so much fun working and collaborating with Raed Saade! He is a force to reckon with, as he is a multi-talented and supportive friend. Since our appearance as contestants on The Voice, we have grown to have a genuine brotherhood and trust in each other. He has always encouraged me to sing and create. As a result, we have collaborated on numerous projects, in both creative and business ways. As our friendship grew stronger, we decided to work together in different capacities. We founded, co-produced, and headlined a Live multicultural variety showcase called Melange. It featured powerhouse singers and show-stopping performances by former X-Factor, American Idol, and The Voice contestants. Our motto was, “party with a purpose;” we wanted to introduce and influence audiences to a multitude of musical genres and styles, as we performed at many high-profile venues in Hollywood. He is a wonderful collaborator, a dear friend, and very instrumental in creating “We Can’t Stop.”

4 — Is the message of “We Can’t Stop” about unity and resilience?

Yes! “We Can’t Stop” is all about resilience and unity. As mentioned, it was created during a time of despair. We both wanted to create something uplifting!

5 — When you perform your music in front of an audience, what gives you the greatest sense of satisfaction?

The greatest sense of satisfaction comes from connecting to an audience and to the story. As a singer and entertainer, it brings me great joy to know that an audience is emotionally invested in my song. The greatest satisfaction is having them feel.

6 — What stands out as the most noteworthy achievement in your career as an artist?

As an artist, the need to connect is paramount. Two of the most noteworthy achievements were singing for the Pope at the Vatican and performing the national anthem for the LA Lakers at the Staples Center. Both these experiences were nerve-wracking but very personally rewarding on many levels.

7 — Outside of your studio sessions, how do you like to occupy your time?

Other than music, I love to act and travel. I also enjoy writing, hanging out with close friends, going to the movies, and spending time with my main squeeze, Dixie… my golden doodle. 🙂

8 — If you had the opportunity to collaborate with a famous music star, who would be your top choice?

I am currently collaborating with the legendary Roslyn Kind and Latin Grammy winner, Paulina Aguirre on some upcoming songs in development. Other than that, it would be a dream to sing along with Stevie Wonder and/or do a collab with The Weeknd.

9 — Have you ever mused about putting your music career on hold?

As an artist working in the entertainment industry, there are always ups and downs. Sometimes, one project will push ahead another due to variables outside of my control. I’ve learned to trust the process. However, despite whatever happens, I know that I will never stop singing; it is who I am, a part of my identity, the way I find my center. When I sing, I feel complete.

10 — What can your fans expect from your upcoming releases?

Fans can expect more music and featured appearances in a multitude of musical venues and films that are currently in post-production. I’m looking forward to sharing more when the time is right! In the meantime, I hope that my music resonates with a global audience!
