El Dusty
Latin Grammy-nominated producer El Dusty opens up on his career and new music in this short but fun interview. The latest single “Catch It” is a fierce female empowerment banger featuring Zairah’s hypersensual lyrical prowess alongside long-time collaborator Clips x Ahoy. In brief, a good mix of Cumbia, Reggaeton, and Dembow beats await you.

1 — Why did you choose the stage name, El Dusty?

I used to go by DJ Dus, I have never been good at coming up with cool names so I just used my real name “Dusty” and threw in a pronoun lol.

2 — Who were the artists and songs that inspired you?

I am inspired by a lot of artists, DJ’s and producers… namely: The Neptunes, DJ Shadow, Armand van Helden, and Rick Rubin.

3 — What made you want to become a music producer and DJ?

I was a Hip-Hop DJ at first and learning to make beats just came naturally, playing them out was my goal, and DJing (and playing in live bands) was a way to do that.

4 – Do you consider yourself a pioneer of the modern Cumbia sound?

I think there are a lot of pioneers in this game, some of the guys I would shout out are Ralphy Ralph, Toy Selectah & Camilo Lara. Inspirations and friends.

5 – Was there ever a time when you realized that Reggaeton would be in your future projects?

From the get-go, the Dembow rhythm has always been a part of my sound pack. Fusing Reggae with any type of music is what I do, so naturally, I’m down with it!

6 – What was the best thing about collaborating with Zairah and Clips x Ahoy on your new single “Catch It”?

Both of them are really good friends and when Zairah heard the beat she was super excited and I’m just glad she felt our music! Clips and I work together regularly, he’s part of the family, so we go way back!

7 – If you could give a short description of this song, what would it be?

Energetic, female empowered banger!

8 – Is there any funny anecdote while you were recording the music video?

There’s a whole bloopers reel that was about to drop on my IGTV lol. Our director, Justin Hoskins is super funny… I think everyone will be surprised!

9 – What is your perception of the growth of Latin music in the states? Is this a trend?

This is definitely not a trend. Latinx is one of the biggest cultures in this country and we ain’t going nowhere!

10 – Finally, what is your motto in life?

Smile Now, Cry Later. ? ☹
