In this interview, ZHANGYE shares how he got his start in music, how he builds melodies like the new EDM anthem “Wherever The Wind Blows,” and much more… Get all the details here!
1 – Tell us about how you started in the music world?
When I was in my teens, I had a period of time where I was feeling somewhat anxious. It was during that time I got to know a Hong Kong band named Beyond. Their music was so inspiring that it shed light through my tunnel of darkness, gave me hope and held me strong. It was then that I discovered the power of music can be so great. I wanted to produce music like that myself, to encourage, inspire and influence others through music. I started to pick up guitar and eventually went to Moscow to study music composing, ended up spending over 10 years there.
2 – Who inspired you to become an artist?
The band Beyond. They were quite influential in China during that era and even today. Their music was really determined to fulfil one’s inspirations, it had an impact across a generation of people in China.

3 – What are the three things you absolutely need in the studio?
That would be a keyboard, a computer, and a cup of coffee.
4 – How big is the EDM scene in China?
The potential of the Chinese EDM market is tremendous. In the meantime, it is still a niche market, but the enthusiasm from EDM lovers is there. We haven’t seen too many individuals or artists focusing on producing EDM specifically.
5 – How do you set yourself apart from the competition?
I am not keen on considering competition. I enjoy the journey of creating melodies and producing the type of music I enjoy myself.
6 – Why people should listen to “Wherever The Wind Blows”?
The song has a natural manner, promoting a free spirit. Perhaps good for a scenario when you’re a bit down in the mood. When the line “wherever the wind blows” comes on, you feel this very relaxed vibe, showing a carefree attitude. I hope that the song might help relax the audience with tense, built-up nerves.
7 – What came first, the melody or the lyrics?
Melody – as you might know already, I come from a classical music composing background, I tend to pay more attention to the melody I create, and focus more on what the music is trying to express. The lyrics came through afterward as they also correlated with the investment work that I do during the daytime.
8 – The outstanding vocals of KARRA give life to your new song. How the collaboration came about?
I had known of KARRA before and was impressed by her unique voice. Eventually, we were introduced by a common friend in the hope of having some collaborations. We showed her the song and she liked it right away. We chimed in with each other quite easily. KARRA is great to work with, not only do we adore her voice but also impressed by her professionalism.

9 – Do you have any gigs planned for the next months?
I was scheduled to perform at one of the largest local music festivals in China in August. However, the event got postponed due to the Covid situation in that city.
10 – Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I can only say that I will continue to produce music, the type of music that I love, and enjoy the process of it.
