Rosabel, one of America’s top remixing duos, has never shied away from pushing boundaries in House music. Their new release brings back the wild classic “La Puta” with fresh private mixes that take that old rebellious energy and make it work for today’s clubs.
1. Let’s dive right in,”La Puta” is an undeniably provocative title. What was the intention behind choosing such a bold name for this release?
My first call from Abel was recorded on a phone answering machine way back in 1989. I wasn’t home to answer the phone, but he kept talking in Spanish on it. He was really upset that I wasn’t there to answer his call.
When I finally heard that nasty message on my answering machine, I grabbed a microphone and recorded the whole thing onto a DAT tape. I then popped some pieces and words into my AKAI sampler and instantly made a track out of it. That’s how ‘La Puta’ was born.
That track was my way of saying, ‘Hey, I heard what you said, and I’m not going to take it lying down!
2. Were you prepared for the reactions this tune generated at clubs?
Not really! This was just a harmless joke I played on Abel. When he heard it, he got all creative, and we signed the track to Groovilicious Records/Strictly Rhythm in New York City. The response was absolutely wild!
3. What made you call these ‘The Private Mixes’? What’s different this time around?
Main called this because these mixes were done, and we were not thinking of releasing them. Until now.
4. Which elements help the new remixes stand out in today’s House music scene?
Just completely modernizing the song to today’s dancefloors/rooms. Technology allows us to modernize the past, musically. It can be a blessing AND a curse…
5. Who’s involved on the remix side, and what’s the story behind linking up with them?
The mixes were done collectively, mostly through Abel. He was constantly having folks submit mixes, and we really weren’t looking for them! But look how this worked out!
6. What drew you to release ‘La Puta – The Private Mixes’ with Carillo Music?
Rod Carillo is like a big brother to both of us, Rosabel. He’s always been there for us. As for me, (Ralphi) I’m always busy with my music, releasing new songs, and working with my musical family. Rod IS a part of that family. We respect and admire each other, and I know that will always be the case.
7. House music has always been about liberation and breaking taboos. How does this material continue that tradition?
As producers, we continue to make great music; THAT itself is liberating. If we continue to produce, we continue that tradition.
8. Have you faced any censorship concerns or backlash?
None that I can think of…
9. Are you cooking up more releases with that same spicy Spanish vibe?
That will never change.
10. Beyond the shock factor, what should stick with listeners?
That we’re always consistent!
