t.A.T.u., the lesbian Russian singers, broke up in 2011, but they reunited in 2025 to perform their first gig of the year in Moscow. Due to the high demand, they might be planning a full tour, starting with multiple shows in Mexico this December.

The full show isn’t embedded here due to illogical and unnecessary UMPG restrictions, so you’ll need to watch it directly on YouTube.

The whole concert went down for about an hour, and Lena Katina and Julia Volkova banged out their biggest hits, like “All The Things She Said,” “Not Gonna Get Us,” and others, jamming to their signature Pop Rock Electronic sound.

Lesbian Russian Singers – Breaking Down the Myth

So here’s the deal: the whole lesbian angle with t.A.T.u. was basically a slick marketing move cooked up by their manager.

Short and sweet? Nope, it wasn’t real. Lena, the redhead, has made it pretty clear she’s straight and just playing a part on stage. Julia, the brunette, has said she’s bisexual, so there’s a bit of truth there, but the whole “schoolgirl lesbians” act? Just performance art.

After they ditched their original producer in 2004, they admitted it was all a calculated stunt to grab attention, and wow, did it work.

The band name, t.A.T.u., translates to “This girl loves that girl” in Russian. This shows how deeply the concept was part of their brand from the start.

It was provocative and got people buzzing. In the end, it was more about pushing boundaries and selling records than reflecting their real lives.

t.A.T.u. Against Putin – Where Do They Actually Stand?

Julia and Lena are kind of all over the map politically, and their views have definitely shifted over the years.

Julia Volkova’s political journey has been… complicated, to say the least. Back in April 2021, she actually announced she was running for a seat in the Russian parliament with United Russia (yeah, that’s Putin’s party). Pretty wild considering t.A.T.u.’s whole rebellious image, right?…

But here’s where it gets interesting. Recently, she’s done a complete 180, saying she’s actually against Putin’s government and wants to stand with queer people.

Lena Katina, on the other hand, has been way more consistent with speaking out. When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, she posted on Instagram condemning the war. That took some guts, considering how the Russian government treats dissenters.

She’s also been a solid ally to the LGBTQ+ community for years; she even publicly called out Julia back in 2014 when Julia made some pretty homophobic comments in an interview.

So yeah, while they sang together for years, it seems like they’ve finally hit an age where they’ve realized the tyranny and human rights abuses that little dictator Vladimir Putin is pulling off.

I have hope in the new generations. They might overcome fear and take him down if needed. This could bring peace to their country and the world.
