Singer-songwriter Spencer Day’s third album, ‘The Mystery Of You,’ continues the eclectic mix of Jazz, Pop, and cinematic themes found in his earlier work, but with a noticeably darker tone. Calling it a concept album wouldn’t be far off, as Day reflects on three turbulent years marked by a broken relationship and the extremes of love and loss.
Thankfully, this isn’t just an album steeped in gloom. One of Day’s strengths as a songwriter is his ability to avoid sinking completely into heartbreak, instead approaching the theme with the same stylistic finesse as his heroes—Cole Porter, Joni Mitchell, John Lennon, and Paul Simon.
Musically, he moves fluently between soul, Latin Jazz, the sweeping scores of Ennio Morricone, early ’60s Pop, and film noir soundtracks. With this release, Spencer Day proves he’s unafraid to confront life’s complexities and refuses to simply rest on his past achievements.
