In this interview, singer and producer Emin Macbayli opens up about the essence of his art. From his Classical beginnings to his evolution with Synthpop, you will get the full scoop.

All his musical inspiration is spilled in this conversation, along with his latest jam, “Lovernova, which I highly suggest blasting at full volume!

Get ready for a trip from the past to the present and into the future. Emin Macbayli is indeed a true master of surprises…

1 — When did you decide to become an artist in your life?

For as long as I can recall music has been an integral part of my life, a place where I can truly express myself. I didn’t necessarily have a specific moment where I decided to become an artist; it’s more like music chose me, guiding me along this creative journey from a young age. Whether it was playing the piano as a child or later discovering my passion for singing and songwriting, becoming an artist has been a natural evolution of my love for music.

2 — It’s amazing to see how talented you are, not only singing but also producing your own tracks. Where exactly did you learn all of this?

Thank you! My journey began as a Classical musician at a very young age—first as a violinist and pianist. But then I realized that if I was going to sing, I needed to develop my singing abilities which is how I ended up doing a second degree as an opera singer! My skills in development and sound engineering have been gained by a combination of study, experimentation, and years of experience. My formal background in music theory is also really relevant to my producing work, providing the freedom to create with fluency of harmony and form. There is always more to learn. The wheel never stops turning.

3 — Your vocal range is very similar to George Michael’s. How does this comparison make you feel?

How do I feel being compared to one of the most emotional voices contemporary music has ever known? Flattered! I think it would be more accurate to say that tonally, there may be similarities, as you mentioned. George Michael has left an indelible mark on my singing and musical style.

4 — I’ve noticed that your songs have a delightful Synthpop influence. I wonder if you have a collection of synthesizers in your recording studio?

I had a few keyboards back in the early 2000s. Since then, I’ve gradually transitioned to using VSTs as they offer me more flexibility in my music production process.

5 — Is there any 80s song Emin Macbayli would like to reinterpret with his own style?

If we delve into 80s vocal music, “Illusion” by Imagination immediately comes to mind, evoking the infectious energy and groove of that iconic era! The song, with its catchy melody, funky bassline, and soulful vocals, embodies the essence of 80s Synthpop fused with Funk and Soul elements. The moment I mention it, that bassline starts playing in my head. : – )

6 — What is the exact meaning behind the lyrics of your new song “Lovernova”?

I guess it might be associated with the star Supernova. “Lovernova” combines the words ‘Lover’ and ‘Nova,’ where ‘Nova’ signifies ‘New.’ It’s a piece of the puzzle within my upcoming album, ‘Star Child,’ which stylistically and lyrically is connected to stars and beyond, akin to the themes explored by artists like Daft Punk and Jamiroquai.

I aimed to capture the essence of 80s lyrics—naïve and perhaps a bit over-romantic—while incorporating imagery of cosmic elements.

7 — Who would you dedicate it to?

Oh, this is a tricky question, even though it seems simple. Dedication of songs isn’t always inspired by fresh emotions; it can also be rooted in past experiences or hopes for the future, underscored by emotional journeys. In the hustle of modern life, we often find ourselves short on time for our loved ones. Perhaps this is what triggered me to write something simple yet heartfelt, like ‘you’re my star, Lovernova, you’re not too far!

8 — With a substantial budget at your disposal, how would you conceptualize the “Lovernova” music video?

Great question! I haven’t actually given it that much thought. A great video is always a combined work based on the vision of several professionals. I guess I would love to hear some ideas about how a director feels and sees the song before putting on the table my own idea.

9 — If you had the opportunity to collaborate with a famous singer or band in a duet, who would be on your mind and why?

It would definitely be Prince; his style was monumental. We both are countertenors, but he was something else, like having several effect processors in his vocal cords. In two of my released songs named “X Ray” and “Say My Name,” I tried to channel that crazy flamboyant energy of his. Stylistically, there were three main artists who influenced me the most: George Michael, Prince, and Aretha Franklin.

10 — Is there anything in your music career that you haven’t done yet but would like to try in the future?

Funnily enough, I’ve been considering trying my hand at singing Jazz, perhaps collaborating with orchestras or big bands. It would mark a significant departure from my usual Pop and Dance-driven style. This would represent a personal challenge for me, as I aim to step outside my creative comfort zone.
